Of Miracles and Bliss
(The image of the picture ‘in a room’ is intended to offer a general idea of scale and appearance. Any work on paper will require framing in order to be displayed.)
The blue mountain at the centre of the image has been made using acrylic ink applied with a dip pen. The rest of the image is acrylic paint, partly applied in more abstract gestures with layers of glaze for depth, contrasting with the hills formed from small triangle shapes.
The title of this work comes from this poem by Don Domanski. A volume of selected poems which I can highly recommend is available from Corbel Stone Press.
NIGHT-SEA JOURNEY
these worms are moments
of a former earth
yet I do not expect them to tell time
like the chiselled breath of prayers
across an ascending hawk tells time
what I want from worms
is their rowing in the flesh
their cold little boats
their eyes of smudge
their mouths like mailslots
I want their night-sea-journey
across darkened water
with their captain shouting
over the rushing waves
I do not expect to understand
but to call from land
from their bruise-coloured beach
a few words they might
take with them to that far shore
of bones and stars
of miracles and bliss.
