Welcome

People often come to therapy when familiar ways of living no longer feel quite sufficient, or when questions about direction and the kind of life they want to inhabit have become harder to ignore.

You might be wondering what needs to change while also sensing that something new is trying to emerge. I offer a form of psychotherapy in which questions of meaning, vitality, and belonging can be taken seriously as part of the work.

Together, we can look at recurring patterns or relationships, while also making space for creativity and the question of what a life well lived might mean for you. Spiritual experience is equally welcome where it is important within your life.

Rather than approaching you as a problem to be solved, I meet you as a whole person. What is difficult in your life matters, but so do your longings and the ways you imagine life might be different.

I qualified in 2013 and am registered with the HCPC as an Art Psychotherapist. My work is grounded in more than 18 years of professional experience across mental health, social care, and private practice, alongside a much longer engagement with art, psychological life, and spiritual enquiry.

This page brings together the key information about how I work, what to expect, and how to begin. Reading through it should give you enough information to decide whether you would like to make an enquiry. The other therapy pages explore particular aspects of my approach in greater detail if you wish to continue afterwards.

How to contact me and make an enquiry

I currently have availability for new clients.

Contacting a therapist can feel like a significant first step, and I appreciate the courage this can require. You are welcome to send me a message if you would like to arrange an initial consultation or have any questions.

All you need to include is a brief outline of what has led you to consider therapy and what you hope to explore or change. There is no need to include personal or sensitive details at this stage.

👉 You are welcome to contact me using the form at the foot of the website, or email me directly at APhillipsPsychotherapy@gmail.com.

  • I usually respond within 48 hours unless I am away from the practice.

  • If you do not see my reply, please check your spam folder, as messages are sometimes filtered.

What brings you to therapy?

People come to therapy with difficulties they can describe clearly, but also with questions that remain harder to name. Sometimes the wish for relief exists alongside a desire to understand more fully what is happening and how one wants to live.

The questions bringing you to therapy might sound something like:

  • Why do I feel held back from living in a way that feels more fully my own?

  • Why do certain emotional or relational patterns keep returning?

  • What matters enough to shape the way I live?

  • What place might creativity or spiritual experience have within my life?

  • How is my relationship with the natural world affecting the way I feel and live?

  • What is changing in my life, and how might I want to respond?

What might become possible through therapy?

The direction of therapy cannot always be known at the beginning. You may arrive with particular hopes for change, while discovering other possibilities through the work itself.

Over time, therapy may help you to:

  • Live with a stronger sense that your life is your own, while remaining connected to the people and responsibilities that matter to you.

  • Respond differently to patterns that have previously felt difficult to change.

  • Develop a more trusting relationship with your inner experience, including parts of yourself that may feel conflicted or difficult to understand.

  • Give greater place to imagination and to the forms of inspiration that bring life or direction.

  • Explore spirituality as a living part of your experience while remaining grounded in everyday life.

Online psychotherapy in the UK

I work online with adults across the UK. Meeting remotely makes regular psychotherapy possible wherever you live, without the time or practical demands of travelling to a consulting room.

Although we meet through a screen, the work can still develop continuity and psychological depth when you have a private space in which to give the session your full attention.

The value of soul-oriented psychotherapy

The origins of the word psychotherapy are associated with attending to or caring for the soul. This remains deeply relevant to how I understand the work.

Soul-oriented psychotherapy does not reduce a person to a problem that needs to be corrected. It asks how a difficulty belongs within the wider life of the person experiencing it, and what it may reveal about the way they are living.

Therapy needs to make room for suffering, but also for what gives life meaning and direction. As we attend to what has become painful or limiting, new responses may gradually become possible.

I offer a welcoming space in which we can begin with what is present and remain curious about what may not yet be fully understood.

My approach to psychotherapy

As an Art Psychotherapist, I work with both verbal and image-based forms of expression.

Our work may take place through conversation, image-making, or a movement between the two, depending on what feels most helpful and appropriate.

There is no expectation that you use art materials, and no artistic experience is required. Equally, if you prefer to work primarily through images, you are very welcome to do so.

My approach is informed by depth psychology, particularly Jungian and psychodynamic thought. I also draw on ecopsychology and remain open to spiritual perspectives where these are meaningful within the client’s life.

Theory informs how I think, but the work begins with the particular person in front of me. I believe psychotherapy is most valuable when it allows genuine exploration while remaining grounded in the realities of everyday life.

If you are feeling uncertain about beginning therapy...

It is understandable to have questions or reservations about beginning therapy.

This may be your first experience of therapy, and the process might feel unfamiliar. Previous experiences may also have left you hesitant about meeting another therapist.

Whatever your concerns, I encourage you to let me know about them. They do not necessarily mean that we cannot work together or that psychotherapy is not right for you. Conversations of this kind can become an important part of where the work begins.

👉 In this article I address familiar concerns about beginning therapy.

Will online depth psychotherapy be right for you?

Psychotherapy can be challenging as well as rewarding. Meaningful change rarely happens all at once, but develops through experience and reflection over time. There may be moments of clarity, followed by the slower work of allowing a new understanding to enter everyday life.

The therapeutic relationship is central to this process. Rather than simply offering advice or solutions, we pay attention to what emerges through our conversations and within the relationship we develop, always within clear professional boundaries.

Depth-oriented therapy is often most beneficial when you are willing to:

  • Reflect on your experience with curiosity rather than immediate judgement.

  • Remain with questions that may not yet have clear answers.

  • Work through difficult periods rather than valuing only moments of insight.

  • Attend consistently and communicate clearly about practical arrangements.

It is important that we are a good fit, although this does not mean sharing the same worldview. I have worked with people from a wide range of backgrounds, and welcome clients who are genuinely curious about the process.

Session options, fees, and beginning therapy

I offer weekly and fortnightly psychotherapy sessions lasting one hour.

I also offer monthly 90-minute consultations. These are best understood as individual reflective meetings rather than ongoing relational psychotherapy.

The standard fee for a therapy session is £65.

Monthly consultations are £90.

We begin with a 75-minute initial consultation, also charged at £65. This gives us an opportunity to talk about what has brought you to therapy and consider whether this way of working feels appropriate for both of us. There is no obligation to continue.

My background as an HCPC-registered Art Psychotherapist

I completed the three-year MA in Art Psychotherapy at Goldsmiths, University of London, qualifying in 2013. The training was grounded in psychodynamic psychotherapy and placed strong emphasis on the therapeutic relationship.

My path into psychotherapy developed through many years of personal and professional engagement with the inner life, including experiences of psychotherapy at different points, and my longstanding practice as a visual artist. Both continue to shape the way I work today.
