The exhibition image is from the 2024 Royal West Of England Annual Exhibition, Bristol. This piece was hung in the well regarded room that is reserved for work of a monochromatic nature.
About this artwork
The pastel is applied by first crumbling it onto the paper in small amounts, and then smoothing it across the surface by hand. The mountain area formed of ink is made using a dip pen with fine nib, and the fine marks in the graphite section utilise a technical pencil.
The Unquiet Land is intended to evoke something of the 'skull beneath the skin' of landscape. The hidden or occulted presences of Earth, an ever shifting sentience amongst the seeming stillness and deep time of aged mountains.
This work on paper is housed in a bespoke wooden frame, with a double mount and non-reflective glass.
