The work began by sketching the outline of the mountain forms in pencil. Pastel is crumbled and sprinkled onto the paper, then smoothed by hand in an expressive and gestural way. Ink is applied in tiny marks using a dip pen, and layers of faint pencil marks were built up to create the peak at the rear of the composition.
